What He Said

Our daughter would like to have a boyfriend. She asked a little boy to "go out" with her while they were playing at school.

He replied, "I can't go out with you. I am an American, and you are a little black girl. We can't do that", as he held his little white arm up to her beautifully-tanned arm.

As I told some friends about this at church this morning, the man had an interesting story to add. It is nothing new, but I wanted to share it with you.

He said when he was a realtor a few years ago, in this town, he was about to sell a home to an African-American family. He got a call from a prominent person in town, who told him he was NOT to sell that home to that family.

No wonder I see only white people here...and a sprinkling of Asians who are mostly doctors' children.

That is all for today. I am still processing my feelings and thoughts, and waiting for the nausea to leave.

Oh Annabelle - did she say how she responded? Perhaps Ethan can be her long distance boyfriend?? You know he thinks she can do ANYTHING - pretty much a superhero in his eyes.

Breaks my heart for her to encounter this at age seven. Nothing else to say other than sorry it is so hopelessly closed minded. I so do not miss the confederate flag flying in the field next to our old house. Sadly, their views will not change for some time as none of them ever travel to experience other cultures. Not that they would aprpeciate them anyway. Love you dearly, Kate - had a fabulous dream the other night that you MOVED!!!
