Book Recommendation

The Primal Teen: What the New Discoveries about the Teenage Brain Tell Us about Our Kids by Barbara Strauch

I am reading this great book and highly recommend it if you have a child who may enter puberty soon, or not so soon. It talks about some recent research on the brain and how puberty affects the brain. Puberty really starts around age 8 and continues into the 20s in some cases. VERY interesting! It has explained a lot to me about my sons.

Like, for example, WHY in the world one of my sons walked into a cold lake on New Year's Day for $5.00. FIVE measley dollars. I mean come on, that was worth at least TEN. It was quite cold here and he knows better, but that brain, oh that brain...it causes teens lots of problems.

It also explains why last year, one of my sons BEGGED me to never sub in his SCHOOL. This week, when I was offered three days in his class, he BEGGED me to say YES! We have had fun together in class. He is very respectful and helpful, and even smiles at me. Well, isn't that a nice change? All because of his brain!

The book is heavy on research, so may not be fascinating to all!

Have a great day! I'm gonna go wave at my neighbor, just a finger. :)

oh, too cute!! Sounds like a great book! The teenage years, sigh... it can be so difficult and seems to take a lot of patience. I remember one teacher saying: 'It is like they have been captured and turned into an alien' lol ( glad you are still waving) : )

I have learned that brain scans actually show their brains to be "abnormal" often until around the age of 24! I tried to keep this in mind when dealing with pre-teens, teens & young adults through my work. I would repeat to myself... they are brain damaged and know not what they are doing ; )And when something traumatic happens they often stop/slow developing/maturing at that age. The human brain and body is amazing!

The book does sound fascinating. I will add it to my 'to read' list.

There's a lot of info about brain scans in this book, D. I think you'd like it.

And K, you have almost made it through the alien stage, without many gray hairs. Good job!!
