Indiana

Many times this week the boys have talked about Indiana, in a longing sort of way. This is the home in which we lived. The boys were little stairsteps. When we moved away, they were 8, 6, and 4. I remember that I was always baking. There seemed to be an abundance of blackberries. They grew along the railroad track and were ready around July 4th. I would go out early when the kids were still asleep and pick away. It was great for my over-stimulated mommy brain. If I picked too many, I froze some for winter.

My mom taught me the love language of food, and I wanted to love my boys that way.

So yesterday, I made this pie.

The boys were soo happy. The Indiana reference was this, when one said, "Mom, I LOVE it when the house smells like this. It takes me back to Indiana. Our home always smelled this good!" Of course, I got tears in my eyes. Tears of happiness that they remembered, and tears of sadness that we are not there.

Indiana is where we built the foundation of our family. We love it, we miss it. Those were some good times! Wouldn't it be fabulous if they remember Arkansas in the same way someday? I am working on that.

Well, I am glad you are here even though that is totally selfish!! :) Our blackberries are pink out here right now - the kids have tried a few already. Do you have some growing out there?? If not, come on out here and pick some soon and we'll make sure you have extras to throw into a patch to have your own! Love that they remember the SMELL of home. Ahhh, longing for the Midwest. . . .

Hmm...I know that house. A little different now. Another set of kids for Shelby to love. Another gal God has brought into my life, this one younger.
That house is the reason I fell in love with Indiana. If it weren't for coffee brewing and a cold diet coke and an understanding heart of a woman not from here I don't think we would still be here.
Miss you my friend. XOXOX
