The Elegant Farmer

The elegant farmer. That's how I always describe my dad to my friends who haven't met him.

I did not and do not see my dad as your typical Midwestern farmer.

For one, he seemed to use proper English. :) He is meticulous about his closet, his white t-shirts, removing the weeds down the long driveway, and his machinery. Oh, his machinery! It is always put away clean and in good repair. He doesn't chew or SPIT tobacco.

A lot of his machinery is lined up in a neat row by a shed. It looks like an auctioneer should arrive at any minute to wrap things up, but no, that is just the way my dad likes to keep them. Orderly. I like that.

I always like to look by my dad's lounge chair to see what he is reading. Of course the elegant farmer does not read fiction. He reads the local newspaper, and usually something farm-related. Always trying to improve his business. I like that.

The elegant farmer has an abundance of moral character. He is as honest as the summer day is long. If he gives you his word, he will not waiver. I like that.

I love my Dad, and feel blessed in many ways that I get to still see his fine example, and that my children see it, too. Happy Father's Day, Daddy!
