Operation: Pie Safe

I have found that working on furniture makes me very happy. I wish I were more skilled at it! In fact, I imagine that if I had it all to do over again, I would love to take some carpentry classes.

I found this pie safe locally. It has been a fun project so far. It was clear when I found it that it had layers of paint on it. That was an attractive thing to me. I like stripping paint. It had a creamy white layer, then a bright white, next a most AWFUL silver! The silver sticks very well and is difficult to strip. It reminds me of the silver paint a farmer might use on his barn roof. Much of that will have to be sanded, because it isn't budging so well.

Keep reading to see the special surprise I found on this piece!!

--here is a wood panel. join me in seeing the vision of gorgeous wood, won't you?

--here she is, currently an ugly duckling, soon to be a swan.

--cream then white paint, and if you look closely, Scary Silver!

-- here is the special surprise!! thread spools were used as pulls on the doors AND on the drawer. LOVE THESE!! Made all the silver paint more palatable.

--and here's my lil helper. she brings me sweet tay. she takes her photo and leaves it as a surprise on the camera.

I love my pie safe, and I love my helper. :)

I can't wait to see the beautiful swan you're working on! I know it will be gorgeous when you are finished. Annabelle sounds like a great helper to have. I love reading all the stories about her "RAOK" :)

Your talents are never ending, sweet Kate!! Love the thread spools as knobs. Can't you just picture an older couple without any knobs and suddenly one of them has the idea to stick those on? Ingenius!

On a different note from a previous blog, I don't get the hangup with people wanting their kids to be star athletes either -especially here. Greg's BFF was a professional lacrosse player for many years and he didn't so much as hold a lacrosse stick until he was in the 7th grade. He coaches lacrosse for kindergartners and he was telling us about a mom who called last week to say she thought it wasn't competetive enough and that they should have more games against other teams. He tried to explain that they can't play until they can throw and catch a lacrosse ball (plus it is a HARD little ball that HURTS when it wacks you). She still didn't get his point. So much for having fun for these parents! And the poor kids!

Julie- EXACTLY! I love those communities where sports is about fun, teamwork, friendships...all those good things. I heard they have that in Michigan. ;)

And yes, I can envision that old couple. (Or maybe the dealer trying to save $$. lol) Either way, they are sweet.
