Spoke with an elderly woman this morning who moved here 30 years ago, from Pennsylvania. She wanted to know how I like it. I paused. I paused again. I did not know her well enough to know if I could tell her the truth. I did not want to hurt her or offend her.
I simply said, "I'm struggling". She had some good advice and an interesting tidbit.
She said carve out your niche, make a few friends and don't worry about the culture. You can't change people, and you can't change their culture.
For example, she has a dear friend, a WONDERFUL man, who has a room devoted to Hitler.
I sometimes like to write these things down because I want it off my chest. Sometimes I just want you to know what's out here.
Good day!

Interesting bunch of people you've been meeting down there. I would really like to talk to the lady more. I bet she has some fantastic stories to share.
Kate - laughed out loud at the last bit of your conversation with her. She sounds like she found her way to stay sane here (even though I must say I don't quite get the Hitler room, but maybe he is a history buff and it isn't because he believes anything Hitler touted (which did you know Hitler was a vegetarian?). I don't know what I would do without you here. I guess I would have to have a special room devoted to something bizarre. . . . oh, where my mind is going right now. . .
Wow, what a dose of ?perspective? you got, Kate. You do run into the most interesting people! All the more to put in your book that you should be writing. Maybe you and Julie, should co-author a book ; )
Got me thinking too... what bizarre room would I have...??? LOL!
Life is full of surprises :)
Julie- I did NOT know Hitler was a vegetarian. Get me a steak, now. LOL!!!
Danica- you have met this woman! I'll give you her name in an email! ;)
Life is full of surpises and interesting people. I often find my mouth hanging open in the most unattractive manner. I am working on it!
