I remembered last year that some of my children heard nothing in school about Dr. Martin Luther King on MLK Day. Today as they exited the van, I said, "Pay attention! I want to know what you learn today about about Dr. King."
One of my children is not home yet, so have not asked him.
Two of my children said the teacher told them stories and taught them about Dr. King.
One of my children, a very dependable source, said he raised his hand and said, "Did you know today was Martin Luther King Day?".
To which the history/social studies teacher quipped, "Really?"....
That was the end of the King discussion for that class. Bet my son will NEVER be student of the month now, lol.
I have not forgotten, and my children have been taught..no matter what the teachers choose to do or not do on a FEDERAL HOLIDAY recognizing the greatest civil rights leader of our time. I am wondering what teachers in other parts of the nation did. I imagine my area is not the only one who ignored it, sadly.

our schools were out today. Do you find it interesting that your school district doesn't observe the day? I know many schools don't, but it is less common than it use to be.
Yes, I find it interesting. The least they could do is teach about him. My eldest is home now, and it was not mentioned to him. So, 2/4 of my kids' teachers ignored the day.
Kate - I too noticed the lack of celebration on this enormously important date for our country. Katrina and I had a discussion as I told you and she referred to it as "King Day." Had to laugh as I walked by the Times Record and the headline was something to the extent of, "Arkansas celebrates King Day." My five-year-old probably. . . well, I won't say it. You know my point. Thought you could appreciate this too - Coretta Scott King was a vegan as is their son Dexter.
