The Worst Part

There is a "worst part" to my new job.

You know, I subbed for a year and a half before being hired. A lot of fun was had with the kids in my class. We got our work done, but we laughed and bonded, too.

So now, I see 840 students a week in the library. SOME of them think I should know their names because I subbed for them. :(

One of them, Joey, was especially appalled that I did not remember his name. They come up to my desk to check out their books, and have to tell me their names. Joey said, "BUT you know me! You subbed in my class. " Ugh. And he wouldn't stop. YOU KNOW ME! Well, heck, now I will never forget his name, but he had to tell it to me the first day he came to the library.

I will get over it, but so far, that is the worst part. I want them to feel known. We all want to feel known, and I live in a community that does not know the little people, the new people, or the poor people. So I work on names. One by one. How many can I learn? 840? Probably not. But I won't quit until I get very close.

You should take it as a huge compliment that he felt you HAD to know his name because he probably felt truly listened to for the first time in his life when he was in your room when you subbed. And HOW can you not remember that?? :) Love the pics of the kids - my gosh Max and Sol look so BIG and Katrina had just said, "Elllllliot" the other day when Ethan and I were talking about Annabelle for some reason. Miss you, love you always and looking forward to the updates!!!

I agree with Julie - take it as a compliment. And, from my experience, you would be surprised at how many names you will remember. Have fun!
