To My Son, regarding setbacks

Dear Son,

Although you handled the news very well, I know that foot surgery was not what you wanted. This gives you another break from sports, an unwanted, unexpected break. This will cause you to miss all of track season.

I am sorry you have a cyst. I am sorry it has to be removed OVER SPRING BREAK, nonetheless.

I know it is important to excel at sports. Sports have always been special to you, and in this community, we know that athletics are a huge deal.

As your mother, of course, I have some things to say to you. Imagine me using my loving, supportive voice, not my lecture or angry voice.

You, as a person, are not defined by your sports. Games will come and go.

What is steadfast about you is your love for God, and His love for you. What is constant about you is your joy and enthusiasm for life. What I admire most is how your love and befriend people, being their biggest cheerleader even when things don't go your way.

An example of this is when you helped with the football team last year. Even though I would not let you play due to your concussion, you went out to those games and were the best water boy EVER. You cheered, and encouraged, and high-fived like no one I have ever soon. That team really appreciated you!

Other parents notice you. They tell me that great things are in store for you. They say that God is using you now, and God will use you in the future. When you become a parent, you will understand how happy their comments make me. I am happy because YOU are succeeding in life, despite setbacks.

Just know that I love how you have defined yourself, as a child of God, a servant leader of others, and as a precious son. I love you, and look forward to this surgery being behind us. I truly admire how you handle life.

Much love
Mom

I had to pull out the tissues. What a beautiful, beautiful letter. I hope he always keeps a copy of this to read when he needs to be lifted up.
