Eternally Grateful

I heard on the radio that thinking nostalgic thoughts brings happiness. Perhaps that is why I have thought so much of my parents this week. Or, it could be that in the midst of parenting 4, I realize how hard they worked to raise 5!

They will have been married 50 years in October. I have been observing them for 46 of those years.

Here are some things I love about them, and for which I am eternally grateful:

1. They taught us to love our country. My dad served in the Army in Korea. They rarely spoke harshly of our country's leaders. Even when Richard Nixon was driven from office, my parents always said, "He made mistakes, but he brought our boys home from Viet Nam." I always have admired how they found something good to say while others criticized.

2. They taught us to work hard. My goodness, my dad is the hardest working man I have ever seen, and now my mom is like the Energizer Bunny. All of us are willing to pull more than our weight at our jobs. It is just a part of who we are, and I wouldn't have it any other way. What we lack in talent, we make up for in "try". My dad's favorite saying when we were little was, "This ain't no rest home." We LOATHED that saying every morning, but especially on Saturday mornings!

3. They taught us all those values that seem somewhat old-fashioned now, like honesty.

4. They taught us the value of "home". When my eldest brother bought a home a few years ago, my dad said to him, "Every man needs a place to hang his hat." I love that old expression. We all have homes that we cherish and take good care of...well, mine is messy right now, but I love it. I bet we would all prefer to live down a long drive like Mom and Dad.

5. They taught us that dogs are special.

6. They showed us that there are many ups and downs in marriage, but if you hang on, the good times come around again. My dad's eyes twinkle when he speaks of my mom. I doubt she believes that, but I have seen it many times.

7. They showed that one does not have to be a millionaire to carve out a great life on the farm. My parents made their own way, without having a lot given to them. I am sooo proud of that!

8. Both of my parents showed a lot of respect to their own parents. I have noticed and really appreciate that.

I am sure there is more to write, but I need to do some laundry. How blessed I am to have been born into this family. I did not know this for a long time, but thank God, wisdom comes with age.

Happy Weekend, my dear friends!
ps I think my niece took this photo. Thanks Tay, but Kristie if it was you, let me know!
