The schools here are wonderful but overcrowded. In the local K-2nd grade school, there are 840 students...and it is growing. To work in all the lunches, children begin eating at 10:15 and the last lunch is at 1:30.
An election is coming up on March 9, and we can vote on a "millage", which is a tax which will raise millions of dollars to build new schools. For someone with a $200,000 home, for example, they will pay $3.00 per month in additional taxes if the millage is passed.
The proposed new elementary will be built on the edge of a nearby city, not in the small town where all the other schools are. This will help reduce traffic snarls in the small town, and is where many of the newcomers are setting. This includes my family.
HERE IS THE KICKER. I am told that in the local cafes, the older people are against the new school because it will "bring blacks into our school".
It does seem like the 1950s here in many regards. The Civil Rights movement was offensive to some in Arkansas, and some still mention where they were when the African-American students were allowed into the high school in Little Rock.
The turnout of the vote will be fascinating. There is no reasoning with ignorant people, and I am afraid that most of them are registered voters!
March 9th will be a very interesting day. I am praying the INFORMED get out and vote YES!

Oy! Praying for enlightenment!!!
Just when you think for ONE day, "Maybe it isn't so bad here," you are reminded of how IGNORANT and decades behind in enlightenment these people are. Good heavens, Kate . . . I'm speechless!!!!!
All I can say is ....... Wow. I'm speechless.
