So Elliot, age 9, had a presidential report to do for Social Studies. He could pick ANY president. Half the class picked Abraham Lincoln, many picked George Washington, but you see, Elliot likes to be unique. He chose our renowned (not!) 14th president, Franklin Pierce. You haven't heard much about him, have you?
He gathered all his info and we sat down to organize it. When Mr. Pierce lost the re-election, he is said to have quipped, "Well, all there is left to do is get drunk!". Elliot's eyes got big. He wanted to be proud of HIS choice, or HIS president. I did what any good mom would do, and I said, "But Elliot, you don't have to include this. It is your report, you can delete what you want."
"Mom", he replied, "this is what makes him interesting." Elliot decided that Mr. Pierce drank a lot because he had lost all three of his children at early ages. Elliot has such a compassionate heart.
SO today he is to read his report to the class. I hope it goes well. Pierce did not turn out to be a hero...but I am proud of Elliot for not following the pack and reporting on Lincoln. Because, as Elliot said, "Duh. Everyone knows about Lincoln."

Well, tell Elliott I learned something new from his report, too! And you are right about his compassionate heart and his great insight!
