The Debate about The Speech

I am sure you are aware of the big debate about Obama speaking to the children.

I've read a lot of different perspectives. I love this country where we are FREE to have different perspectives.

The speech will not be shown at Elliot's school, grades 3 and 4. Not sure if the principal is not allowing it or if it is not meant for the younger grades.

But it will be shown to my two boys in grades 5 and 7. To tell you the truth, I am very excited about it. With our country experiencing 30% dropout rates in our high schools, we need to do something. Obama has had quite a journey. You all know the story...single mom, absent father, caring grandparents....his story resonates with MANY students out there. I see many grandparents raising their grandbabies in my world.

I think he will want to be re-elected in four years. His words will be carefully chosen. I think he will be very inspirational and I appreciate his efforts and concern for our youth.

I am interested to see how many children in my boys' classes get to watch it. If they don't have a signed permission slip, they will go to another classroom to read. Should be interesting.

Yes, very interesting. I have asked around and different districts are handling the speech differently. Luckily Evan will have the opportunity to watch it at school tomorrow.

Just found out Elliot's school opted out, which is ok. The speech is kind of long for little ones. I am sure length is not the reason they opted out, though.

Julia is in 4th grade and her principal decided to not show it to anyone (grades 1-5) because it was focused more for older kids. I watched it a little, seemed like a nice speech... something parents do or should say to their kids. I am all for repetition!

This wasn't mentioned to the parents at all in our community. It was shown at our 4th and 5th grade elementary school. Elly really likes President Obama but reported it "boring." Pretty much a non-event.
